TRAILHEAD DIRECTIONS

The State Line Trail begins opposite the Greenwood Lake Marina, off New York 210 in Greenwood Lake.

New Jersey

PASSING THROUGH THE ABRAM S. HEWITT STATE FOREST, THE BEGINNING OF NEW JERSEY’S PORTION OF THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL TRAVELS PARALLEL TO THE NEW YORK–NEW JERSEY STATE LINE, WHICH RUNS ALONG BEARFORT MOUNTAIN ABOVE GREENWOOD LAKE. IT PASSES THROUGH WAWAYANDA STATE PARK BEFORE DESCENDING TO VERNON.

CROSSING THE VERNON VALLEY, A FORMER GLACIAL LAKE, THE A.T. ASCENDS POCHUCK MOUNTAIN AND DESCENDS TO THE KITTATINNY VALLEY. IT CONTINUES ACROSS THE VALLEY TO HIGH POINT STATE PARK AFTER PASSING CLOSE TO UNIONVILLE, NEW YORK.

HIGH POINT IS, AS THE NAME IMPLIES, THE HIGHEST POINT IN THE STATE. ALTHOUGH THE A.T. DOESN’T REACH THE SUMMIT, A SHORT SIDE TRAIL DOES. FROM HIGH POINT STATE PARK, THE A.T. TRACES KITTATINNY RIDGE TO STOKES STATE FOREST, MOVING ALONG A ROCKY FOOTPATH THROUGH HICKORY AND SCRUB-OAK FORESTS.

FROM THE FOREST, THE TRAIL CONTINUES ALONG KITTATINNY RIDGE THROUGH WORTHINGTON STATE FOREST TO THE DELAWARE WATER GAP NATIONAL RECREATION AREA. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE SOUTHERN END OF THE A.T. IN NEW JERSEY IS SUNFISH POND, A BEAUTIFUL GLACIAL POOL.
